The division that actually helps
Materials get grouped by composition — stone, ceramic, metal, polymer — and that grouping is almost useless when you are choosing something. A structural steel section and a metal wall panel are both “metal” and share nothing about how they are selected.
Grouping by the job the material does predicts the selection process:
Structure carries load. Selected by an engineer against a design code, evidenced by calculation.
Envelope separates inside from outside. Selected against exposure, thermal and moisture performance, evidenced by tested assemblies.
Finish is the visible layer. Non-structural by definition. Selected against exposure, maintenance and appearance, evidenced by product data plus the assembly it sits in.

Why finish materials are a distinct problem
Two things make them different from structure.
The consequence of failure is indirect. A finish material rarely fails by breaking. It fails by letting water reach what is behind it, and the damage appears in sheathing and framing long after the visible face still looks fine. Performance belongs to the assembly. A fire classification, a water-resistance result, an NFPA 285 outcome — these describe a tested build-up, not a product on a pallet. A compliant panel does not make a compliant wall, as Metal Wall Panels sets out.

The same material in different groups
Classification follows use, not chemistry. Porcelain is a finish on a wall and a floor material underfoot, with different requirements in each. Stone can be structural masonry or a non-structural veneer, and the veneer version is governed by weight limits that structural masonry has no equivalent of.
