What it is

Cultured stone — the industry term is adhered manufactured stone masonry veneer, or AMSMV — is a cement-based unit cast in moulds taken from natural rock. ASTM C1670 describes the composition directly: cementitious materials, aggregates, air-entraining and concrete admixtures, colouring pigments and reinforcing fibres, wet-cast into shapes simulating the appearance of stone.

It is an adhered product by definition. There is no full-bed version, and no version that bears on a ledge.

The two standards that govern it

This is one of the better-standardised materials in the family, and knowing which document does what saves a lot of argument:

ASTM C1670 covers the units — acceptable materials, physical requirements, dimensional allowances, finish and appearance. It sets hard dimensional limits: no more than 2.625 in (67 mm) thick, no face dimension greater than 36 in (915 mm), and no more than 5 ft² of face area per unit.

ASTM C1780 covers installation — materials, job conditions and substrate-specific requirements.

A specification that names C1670 alone has specified the product but not the installation, which is where the risk actually sits.

Where installations fail

The failure record for manufactured stone is not a story about units breaking down. It is about water.

Adhered veneer is not a barrier system. Water gets behind it, and the assembly has to let that water drain and dry. When the water-resistive barrier is missing, discontinuous or unlapped; when there is no drainage provision; when flashing at openings and terminations is absent or reversed; when the veneer is carried down to grade with no clearance — the water stays. What follows is damage to the sheathing and framing behind, usually discovered long after the visible face still looks fine.

None of that is a criticism of the material. It is a statement about which parts of the assembly decide the outcome, and they are all installed before the first unit goes on.

Common formats

Flats and corner returns, as with any veneer. Panelised units, where several pieces are pre-assembled on a backing, are also common and change both the installation method and the weight.

Advantages

Weight is lower than quarried stone of comparable coverage, which widens where it can be used. Appearance is consistent between deliveries, and cost follows moulding volume rather than quarrying, so it is generally more predictable to budget.

Limitations

Because units come from a finite set of moulds, pattern repetition appears at scale unless the installer deliberately mixes and distributes. Colour is a manufacturing property rather than a geological one, so long-term fade behaviour is a product question to put to the manufacturer. And the face is a cast surface: when chipped, the exposed interior does not match, whereas damaged natural stone exposes more of the same stone.

Installation overview

Water-resistive barrier and drainage plane, lath, scratch coat, setting bed, units, pointing — following ASTM C1780 and the manufacturer’s instructions, which are frequently more restrictive than the standard. Clearances at grade and above paved surfaces are set by the manufacturer and the code, and closing them is one of the most common installation faults.

Maintenance

Cleaning, plus inspection of terminations, flashing and clearances. Because the units are cementitious, efflorescence can originate in the veneer itself as well as behind it, so a deposit is not by itself proof of a barrier failure — but it is a reason to look.
