The decision in one paragraph
Both are adhered veneers. Both are carried by the wall behind them, both are governed by the same code weight limits, and both fail for the same reason when they fail. What separates them is provenance and predictability: natural stone gives you geological variation and the way real stone ages, cultured stone gives you a standardised product with consistent supply and lower weight.
Standards: the surprising asymmetry
Most people assume the natural material is the better documented one. It is the other way round.
Cultured stone has ASTM C1670 for the units — with hard dimensional limits of no more than 2.625 in thick, no face dimension over 36 in and no more than 5 ft² of face area — and ASTM C1780 for installation. Two documents, covering product and workmanship.
Natural stone veneer has no equivalent single unit standard. Its properties are the properties of the named stone, which means the specification has to name the stone and obtain absorption and weight from the supplier. That is not worse, but it is more work, and a specification saying only “natural stone veneer” has specified less than one saying “manufactured stone to ASTM C1670”.
Appearance: repetition is the tell
At the scale of a sample board, the two are hard to separate. At the scale of a facade, cultured stone comes from a finite set of moulds and the same face reappears. Good installers mix and distribute units to break the pattern; poor ones do not, and the wall reads as a repeating texture.
Natural stone has no pattern to repeat. The trade-off is that batch variation between quarry runs is real, so late additions may not match.
Damage tells you which one you have
A chipped natural unit exposes more of the same stone, so damage weathers in. A chipped cast unit exposes a cast interior in a different colour, so damage stays visible until repaired. On elevations that take knocks — at grade, near vehicle routes, on public frontage — this difference matters more than the initial appearance.
What does not distinguish them
Water management. Both are adhered veneers, and neither is a barrier. The water-resistive barrier, drainage plane, flashing and grade clearance decide the outcome for both. Efflorescence can occur with either.
Which one should you choose?
Choose natural stone veneer when provenance matters to the project, when the elevation will take damage that should weather in, and when the weight can be carried under the adopted code limit.
Choose cultured stone when supply consistency matters, when weight is constraining the assembly, or when a clearly standardised product with a defined installation specification is worth more than geological variation.
Neither choice rescues a badly detailed wall.

They are different products rather than different grades. Cultured stone is covered by a dedicated ASTM specification for both the units and their installation, which is more product standardisation than natural stone veneer has.
Which one lasts longer?
Both outlast the assembly behind them when the water management is right, and both fail early when it is not. Longevity on real projects is decided by the drainage plane and flashing rather than by the choice between these two.
