The decision in one paragraph
If the wall can carry conventional adhered stone and the location is exterior, conventional veneer is the better-understood choice. If the substrate cannot carry it, or the surface is curved, or the weight budget is the binding constraint, flexible stone does something no other product in this family does.
The standards asymmetry is the main practical difference
Natural stone veneer is not covered by a single unit standard either, but it sits inside a well-established framework: the code’s adhered-veneer provisions, dimension-stone attachment guidance, and stone properties obtainable from the supplier for a named material.
Flexible stone veneer has no dedicated consensus standard. Searching the published catalogues turns up standards for adhered manufactured stone, for dimension stone attachment, for ceramic tile — but nothing written for stone bonded to a flexible backing.
The consequence is not that the product is unusable. It is that the specification question changes. With natural stone you name the stone and obtain its properties. With flexible stone you name the product and obtain its test evidence, because two products bearing the same description can differ in backing, adhesive and UV stability — and those are what decide exterior performance.
Weight is the reason to consider it at all
Conventional adhered veneer has to fall under the code’s weight limit, which is 15 psf under the 2021 IBC and 30 psf under the 2024 IBC. Where a renovation substrate or an interior partition cannot take that, the conversation about conventional stone ends.
Flexible stone is substantially lighter. It opens interior partitions, columns, curved features and retrofit surfaces where the alternative is not “a different stone” but “no stone”.
Exposure is where conventional veneer wins
Freeze-thaw is the sharp edge. For natural stone veneer the question is answerable: obtain the absorption for the named stone and assess it against the exposure. For flexible stone the question is answerable only for a specific product, and many products are rated for interior or sheltered use only. Submerged positions, continuously wet areas and exterior floors are generally excluded outright.
Substrate flatness reverses the usual expectation
The thicker product is the more forgiving one. A conventional veneer’s setting bed absorbs some substrate deviation. A thin flexible sheet telegraphs it, so the flatness requirement is tighter for the lighter product — the opposite of what people assume.
