Pre-comparison EPD boundary check sheet for finish materials

4buildingmaterials.com · Updated October 2026

Use this blank verification record before comparing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for wall or floor finish materials. Under ISO 14025 and ISO 21930, two declarations cannot be compared directly unless they fulfill the same function and share aligned Product Category Rules (PCRs), reference units, life-cycle modules, and data boundaries. Enter “Not stated — request from supplier” wherever a field is missing.

· Read the EPD boundary guide · Download CSV record

Pre-comparison rule: Stop direct numerical comparison if Product A and Product B use different reference units (for example, 1 kg vs. 1 m²), different PCR documents or versions, unaligned life-cycle modules (for example, A1–A3 only vs. A1–C4), or unstated ancillary installation materials (adhesives, mortars, underlayments, or carrier rails).

1. Project assembly and functional equivalence

Verification fieldProduct A recordProduct B record
Project surface and location (interior floor, wet wall, exterior rainscreen, etc.)
Required assembly function (wear class, moisture exposure, acoustic or fire target, study period)
Manufacturer, product name, thickness, and surface format
Required substrate, adhesive/mortar/underlayment, or sub-frame rails (A4–A5)

2. Declaration metadata and boundary alignment

EPD boundary checkProduct A declarationProduct B declaration
Program operator and registration number
Core rule and category PCR title, version, and publication date
Declared unit or functional unit (exact quantity, area, thickness, and mass per m²)
Data specificity (facility-specific, manufacturer-average, or industry-average)
Manufacturing plant location(s) and regional electricity grid
Issue date and 5-year expiration date (ISO 14025 / EPA validity check)
Included life-cycle modules (A1–A3 only, or A4–A5, B1–B7, C1–C4)
Reference Service Life (RSL) and building study period (if B modules are included)

3. Multi-impact indicators and comparability decision

Reported indicator (record units and module scope)Product AProduct B
Global Warming Potential (GWP 100, kg CO₂e per unit)
Biogenic carbon treatment and end-of-life assumptions (if wood/bio-based)
Acidification and eutrophication potentials
Ozone depletion and photochemical smog formation
Primary energy demand and net freshwater consumption
Separate indoor VOC / chemical emissions test certificate (not covered by EPD)
Direct comparability status (Comparable as-is / Needs WBLCA assembly normalization / Incomparable)
Follow-up documentation requested from supplier

Keep copies of both full EPD PDFs, PCR references, and installation datasheets with this check sheet.Reviewer: __________________________ Date: __________________________
